A Youth Art, Photography and Writing Contest is being sponsored by the Viera Voice in an effort to raise awareness for what residents of Brevard can do to help protect our wildlife and nature habitat.

Submission due on or before April 5 at 5 p.m.

All entries must be hand-delivered to: 

Viera Voice, 7630 N. Wickham Rd., 105, Melbourne. Hours 9 - 5 p.m.

Pizza Gallery & Grill, 2250 Town Center Ave, The Avenue Viera. Hours: 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

 

Theme for Contest: Beauty of Wild Florida

The contest is open to U.S. residents who have not completed 12th grade and are currently enrolled in public, charter or private school or being home schooled.

 

Categories: There are three categories for groups from grades K-3, 4-7 and 8-12.

1. Art – two dimensional – paintings and drawings

2. Photography

3. Writing – essay or poetry

 

Prizes: ($580 in cash prizes.)

$35 first place winner in each category and grade group, Publication of their winning achievement in the May or June 2019 issue of the Viera Voice

$20 for second place in each category, Certificate of Achievement

$10 for third place in each category, Certificate of Achievement

For children with disabilities, a parent or guardian may request contact from the judging committee at 321-242-1235 to assist with category placement.

Winners will be announced at the Viera Wetland Nature Festival 1 p.m. on April 13.

Up to 30 of the top entrants will have their works of art, photography and/or writing displayed at the annual Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards Dinner on April 14, along with other nature exhibits.

How to Enter:

1. Print, complete and include a Contest entry form with each art submission (one entry per student is allowed in each category).

2. The child’s name should not be visible on the front of the photo, artwork or written entry. Name and phone number should be on the back to identify owner.

 

3. Essays should be typed or handwritten on 8.5 x 11 paper and be 200 words maximum in length. Poetry should be typed or handwritten and submitted on single 8.5 x 11 piece of paper.

4. Photographs should be a minimum of 7 inches on the shortest side and a maximum of 12 inches on the longest side and any size combination of these dimensions are acceptable. All photos must be mounted on foam board and can have a front mat if desired but not required. The photographs can be printed on photo paper.

 

5. Art work should be no larger than 11 x 14 and can be mounted on a 11 x 14 mat or foam board if desired, but not required. Paintings can be on paper, canvas or natural resources.

 

6. All entries are to be the youth’s ideas and designed without any assistance from adults. Adults can help them prepare artwork for submission such as printing and mounting of artwork or typing child’s entry if they cannot.

 

7. A trip to the Viera Wetlands is highly recommended for inspiration of the submission, but is not required.

PICK-UP: Please note: All submissions can be picked up at the Nature Festival April 13 after 1 p.m. or at the Viera Voice office starting Monday, April 15, during hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Any item not picked up by May 10 will become property of the Viera Voice.

Winning Notification: Winners will be announced at the Viera Wetland Nature Festival April 13 at 1 p.m. and announced in the May 2019 issue of Viera Voice.
