Viera Legends softball game a winner in more ways than one

Various “celebrity” softball players came out Nov. 1 to play against the Viera Legends and the coaches of the local Little League. Their sense of humor and love of the game was obvious as they played on this brisk, windy day at Viera Regional Park in Viera.

The Viera Legends played ball Nov. 1 against the Celebrities of Brevard as well as a second game against Little League coaches at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera.

The Legends of Viera are a fun and rowdy group of softball enthusiasts age 55 and over. Their sense of fun is contagious. Most are in good shape and play sports or work out on a regular basis.

The first game ended with a score of 26-13 in favor of the Legends. Celebrities included Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Rev. Mark Ragsdale of the Church at Viera and several others who hold prestigious titles in Brevard County.

The teams gave it their all on this brisk day and lots of people turned out to watch and enjoy the all-you-can-eat barbecue and pizza provided by Pizza Gallery & Grill.

The second game featured the Legends against the Little League coaches. The Legends did better this time, beating the coaches by a score of about 30-3.

“We gave up counting in the middle of the game,” laughed Chris Conneen, owner of the Pizza Gallery & Grill. “It was pretty sad for the coaches!”

Although the day was chilly, plenty of people spent $10 apiece to support the teams. There were lots of laughs and good-natured teasing as the games were played. There was nothing very serious about either of the innings. Sheriff Ivey’s neon pink socks were the subject of a lot of ribbing.

The next day, the screening of the movie “Extra Innings” was presented at the Heritage Isle Ballroom  in Viera. The documentary film follows the world champion senior softball team on an exciting adventure. For a $10 donation, attendees were able to view the film and enjoy movie-style concessions, which benefited the Florida Senior Sports Association and the Viera/Suntree Little League. The film will be available via YouTube.
