Local parents may not be able to grant the holiday wish of a pony for most kids that ask, but a local charity may have the next best thing. How about a gift for a pony instead?
Harmony Farms will host its popular holiday open house Blizzard at the Barn from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. The event will also serve as a housewarming party for the new location of Harmony Farms, at 2205 Pluckebaum Road in Cocoa.
In addition to treats for purchase to feed to the horses, the event will feature face painting, a petting zoo, a holiday shop and games, with pony rides for a $5 donation.
“Blizzard at the Barn started as a way to thank our families, but it has sort of grown over the years into a bigger, public event,” Harmony Farms marketing and events coordinator Lovise Miller said.
Harmony Farms is a volunteer-based, nonprofit charity that provides equine assisted therapy to individuals with disabilities of all ages, with a special focus on injured combat veterans.
Harmony Farms made the move to its new spot in March to be able to accommodate more horses, and ultimately, more riders. The extra space will make it possible for services to be extended to even more people in the area who can benefit from the therapy activities the horses provide.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the new location is that it has a covered arena which makes it possible for therapy sessions to take place in any sort of weather. Twelve Harmony Farms horses are stabled there, and there are also some other boarding horses on the property.
“It’s great because we don’t have to cancel any therapy sessions due to hot or stormy weather. We plan to add more activities in the coming months too,” Miller said.
An Angel Sponsor for the charity, equine veterinarian Dr. Bradley Newman will open up his office during the Blizzard event, located just adjacent to Harmony Farms at 2005 Pluckebaum Road.
“We’re really happy to have Dr. Newman involved in this event, and really in our everyday mission here at Harmony Farms. It’s great having him as a neighbor,” Miller said.
