Course improvements please members during busy winter golf season
Golf is in full swing for the winter season at Viera East Golf Course with beautiful new greens, new golf carts, new GPS systems in the golf carts and modifications to the course to improve playability.
The men’s league at the Viera East Golf Course is known as VEMA, has 112 members and is in the beginning of the major golf tournament season for its group. Having just finished the Directors Cup last month, the next tournament is the VEMA Cup. It is a two-man team in a scramble format for the first round and switches to a best-ball format for the second round.
VEMA used individual Stableford scoring for its latest flighted tournament. With the return of the snow birds, four flights averaged 12 members.
Gary Shiffrin won the first flight, with Paul McCarthy and Peter Maloney following in second and third.
Wilson Butler prevailed in the second flight. John Perino and Larry Hutker were second and third respectively.
Ed Cleveland claimed the third flight, with James Alt and Warren Powell following in second and third.
Gene Barrett won the fourth flight. John Gulla and Duck Milne were second and third respectively.
Jim Robinson on No. 4, Ben Herrman on No. 7, Shiffrin on No. 13 and Ed Cleveland on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin.
Lane Burney, a PGA pro, helped in organizing and running the tournament.
