Space Coast United Soccer Club is going to celebrate the 32nd annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Feb. 3 at Viera Regional Park.

The event, which will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will be held to celebrate the extraordinary achievements in girls’ and women’s sports and the positive influence athletic participation brings to their lives.

The national theme for National Girls & Women in Sports Day (which is actually on Feb. 7) is “Play Fair, Play IX.”

Space Coast United’s theme for the event is “Love of the Game and Opportunities to Play at All Levels.”

The Feb. 3 event is open to the public and should be suitable for girls of all ages. No previous soccer experience is required in what promises to be an entertaining, fun-filled day at Viera Regional Park.

Activities include coaching sessions with female coaches, soccer games, tug-of-war, relay races and a JV/Varsity scramble friendly between the Eau Gallie High and Viera High girls teams.

Rollins College women’s soccer head coach Alicia Schuck will conclude the festivities with a keynote speech.

Space Coast United is among the minority of clubs in the state that offer girls-only programming in the younger, youth developmental age brackets, and its staff has been repeatedly recognized by US Youth Soccer for excellence in girls coaching for the past three years.

That includes five awards in 2017 alone. SCU coaches won the US Youth Soccer Girls Recreation Coach of the Year (state level); the Region III Girls Recreation Coach of the Year; the Region III Girls Competitive Coach of the Year; the FYSA Girls Recreation Coach of the Year (state level) and the FYSA Girls Competitive Coach of the Year (state level).

All told, SCU girls coaches have won nine awards during the past three years.
