It’s been quite a year for Space Coast United Soccer Club coach Cal Dixon … and it just keeps getting better.

After being named the 2017 Florida Youth Soccer Girls Competitive Coach of the Year award in August, Dixon found out last month that he had won the Region III award as well.

The region is made up of 12 state associations: Florida; Georgia; South Carolina; North Carolina; Tennessee; Arkansas; Alabama; Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas North, Texas South and Oklahoma.

“It was a bit unexpected,” Dixon said. “I knew that I was voted for the Florida Girls Competitive Coach of the Year. This regional award just came in the mail. I had no idea it was coming. It was a nice surprise.

“I was really pleased to win it. I give a lot of credit to the girls I coach at the club for helping me win it. I wouldn’t be able to win it without them working hard.”

In addition to coaching two teams for Space Coast United in 2017, Dixon was also coaching at Eastern Florida State College and Florida Tech.

He’s now in his first season as head coach of the Viera High girls soccer team, which is poised to make a deep run into the playoffs.

Dixon’s Space Coast United teams won numerous tournament titles in 2017, with the big payoff coming when the U14 team won the state championship.

“It is easy to see why Coach Dixon’s teams are highly motivated, very disciplined, and committed to good sportsmanship at every practice and game,” SCU President Ann Fuller said in a press release.

“He is a fantastic role model, who not only insists on his players striving for constant improvement, but applies that expectation to himself. Space Coast United is proud to have him on our staff.”
