Suntree United Methodist hosts ‘Out of this World’

Central Florida Winds will perform “Out of this World” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 at Suntree United Methodist Church.

The free concert will feature the music of John Philip Sousa and Gustav Holst.

Sousa wrote “Looking Upward Suite” in 1902. It was one of 11 suites Sousa wrote while inspired by things he saw that were somehow related to celestial bodies.

Holst wrote “The Planets” between 1914 and 1916. It was inspired by his interest in astrology and influenced by the works of Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Debussy.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first orchestral performance of “The Planets,’’ February’s performance will feature the world premiere of a new concert-band transcription by Dutch arranger Christiaan Janssen.

The musicians of Central Florida Winds are professional musicians, talented amateurs and gifted students that volunteer their time to perform  transcriptions of orchestral works and music written for the group.  They live and work throughout Central Florida.

Suntree United Methodist Church is located at 7400 North Wickham Road in Melbourne.
