Gourd Festival continues to please its fans

The Florida Gourd Society will conduct its 2020 State Gourd Festival from Feb. 21 to 23 at the Azan Shrines Center at 1591 W. Eau Gallie Blvd. in Melbourne.

It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

This will be the seventh year that the event has been held in Melbourne and the 21st year that it has been held in Florida.

The free event usually draws between 1,000 and 1,500 people for the three days.

Activities include up to 30 classes all weekend and demonstrations during lunch hours.

It will highlight an Azan kitchen, gourd growers and supply vendors, a gourd competition area, silent auctions and raffles.

The growers bring in large trailers full of varieties of gourds and spread them out on the grassy area in front of the auditorium. Inside, viewers will find supply vendors with tools, beads, dyes and patterns. Crafted gourds also will be for sale in the booths as well as those in the competition area. The competition has 50 different categories including many styles and techniques from lamps, jewelry, toys, masks, bird houses and holiday gourds.
