Hawks look to bounce back after losing opener
BY CARL KOTALA
How will the Viera High football team
react to adversity under new
coach
Paul Frazier? Tune into this week’s home game against Cocoa Beach to
find
out.
Viera’s season opener against Eau Gallie Friday night didn’t
exactly go as
planned. The Hawks fell behind by two touchdowns within the first five
minutes
and eventually lost 20-6 to the host Commodores. How they respond next …
well,
that’s the big test to show that things really will be different for the
Hawks
in 2010.
“We expect to wear that ‘Hawks’ across our chest with pride,”
Frazier said.
“We expect them to respond the way we know they’re going to respond.
They’re
going to come out and play like champions. We’re going to work hard, and
we’re
going to come out and play hard.”
The Hawks, coming off a 2-8 season, will certainly need to start
better
against Cocoa Beach than they did against the Commodores. On Eau
Gallie’s first
play, running back Irvin Rutledge kept his legs churning and broke away
from
would-be tacklers, turning what would have been a modest gain into a
72-yard
touchdown.
To the Hawks’ credit, they didn’t fold. But while they continued to
play
hard, they just couldn’t seem to get themselves untracked against Eau
Gallie’s
defense. Viera struggled to run the ball consistently and the Hawks
passing game
didn’t get rolling until the second half.
Viera quarterback Tyler Corns was just 1 for 9 for 20 yards in the
first
half, but finished the game 9 for 26 for 135 yards and an interception.
Kyle
Smith had six of those receptions for 95 yards. Jacques Williams scored
Viera’s
only touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. And defensively,
Ryan
Colby and Jeff Walker were among the standouts.
