Miles for Myles 2014

The local nonprofit foundation Miles Freeberg Foundation will host the fifth and final Miles for Myles 5K run/walk in memory of Myles Freeberg. The event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at Viera High School with registration at 7 a.m.

Myles Freeberg was a scholar athlete and the only male valedictorian in the Class of 2011 at Viera High School. He was on his way to have his senior picture taken when he was hit by a distracted driver. He died the next day, on July 8, 2010, from injuries suffered in the accident.

The first Miles for Myles 5K was organized by Hastings Kofkin as a school project. Held on Jan. 8, 2011, the event raised funds for scholarships in Myles’ memory.

Since then, the Myles Freeberg Foundation has awarded 47 scholarships and 12 internships to Brevard County high school seniors to help them realize their goal of pursuing a higher education.

The event is open to walkers and runners of all ages and is not timed. Registration is $25.
