Viera High’s Gage Guettler is trying to drive, chip and putt his way to the 2018 Masters Golf Tournament.

The rising sophomore won the boys 14-15 age group in the Drive, Chip & Putt tournament held at Duran Golf Club on May 20.

That puts him into the subregional tournament, which will be Aug. 12 at the Grand Cypress in Orlando. The top two finishers at that event will move on to the regional finals at TPC Sawgrass on Sept. 16, where the winner will get the chance to compete for the national title at the Masters in Augusta, Ga.

Guettler, who played as a freshman on the Viera High varsity team last season, plays on the Space Coast Junior Golf Tour and also spent time in the Duran Junior Development Program.

In the May 20 event at Duran, he was first in a field of 15.

Golfers hit three balls in each events. The driving competition was based not just on distance, but also on accuracy, while the chipping and putting scores were based on how close the shots were to the hole.

If Guettler plays well in Orlando, he could be one step closer to the Masters.
