Viera High School history teacher Jeff Draves went to work recently expecting a day like any other. But, by second period, he would discover that a big surprise was in store for him.

Kim Garton, a former Viera High government teacher, and currently the social studies resource teacher for Brevard County Schools, came to see Draves at his classroom. While there, she awarded him with the well-deserved title of Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

Principal Mike Alba, and a group of 15 students, all fans of Draves, also joined in on the surprise.

“I couldn’t do it without great students, great support from the administration and from my fellow teachers,” Draves said.

Draves is one of the founding teachers at Viera High School. He credited his district win to the students he has taught during his 12 years at the school.

“When you teach the best kids, you get rewarded for it,” he said.
