A longer season and a new tournament made this another special season for members of the Duran Women’s Golf Association.

Laurie Thomas was the winner of the inaugural Joan Raymond Cup trophy, which was named after one of the league’s founding members who passed away in 2017.

Sue Ann Franklin and Susan Crain were the highest point winners during the course of the season, which began in October, and consisted of weekly tournaments where players could rack up points to qualify for the final competition.

Juanita Call also recorded the first hole-in-one the league has seen in several years.

“Duran was thrilled with another successful DWGA season,” Duran PGA Professional Matt Morrison wrote in an email.

“It’s exciting to see the league grow and thrive each

year. We are very grateful to our sponsors — Deb Tomczak Realtor and Robbie Rosenberger from Golf Carts Unlimited. Their involvement allows the players to enjoy great prizes and benefits.”

It was because of those sponsors that the DWGA was able to add another month to the season and come up with the season-ending Joan Raymond Cup competition.

And just like its counterpart, the Duran Men’s Golf Association, the women’s league is continuing to become more popular with local golfers.

“DWGA gained new members this past season across a broad range of handicaps,” League President Sally Soutter wrote in an email.

“It was an enjoyable season for our 44 members as our events were competitive, but friendly, and we celebrated each other’s good play throughout.”
