Season slows during summer months
Summer play has begun as the snowbirds are leaving or have already gone.
The Viera East Men’s Golf Association is averaging around 50 golfers per week and the rounds are going faster, which allows for more time at Divots restaurant and the stories we tell about our golf game.
In a recent VEMA event, Ron Gonyea, John McComas, Rick Molchos and Duck Milne teamed up to win.
The team of Ben Herrman, Bill Oakley, Tom Walker and Mike Piccinnini placed second.
Dave Parker, Greg Humble, Bill Ames and a blind and random draw finished third.
Bruce Ames on No. 4, Ed Raleigh on No. 7, Kevin Maloney on No. 13 and Dave Hill on No. 16 were closest-to-the pin.
On May 2, Tony Hines, the tournament director, implemented a Stableford format with full handicap for the weekly event.
Tom Welters won the first flight, with Peter Maloney placing second and Guy Sullivan was third.
In the second flight, Steve Wing was first. Jim Roplines was second and Simon Cole placed third.
Paul Winter won the third flight. Craig Smith was second, and Freddie Baltazar placed third.

There are three key rules for playing well and staying healthy during summer rounds of golf.
1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
2. Wear a hat and sunglasses to provide protection from the sun.
3. Use a lot of sun tan lotion.
