St. Patrick’s Day conjures a lot of Celtic images — from the green beer to the lucky shamrock. When it comes to music, though, it’s the sound of the bagpipe that is most associated with the holiday’s celebrations.
Locals interested in hearing bagpipe and drum talent will have an opportunity nearby. The Space Coast Highlanders, a bagpipe and drum corps, will perform throughout Brevard on St. Patrick’s Day — including a 1 p.m. show at the Viera Elks Club, 5820 U.S. Highway 1. The band specializes in Great Highland bagpipe, snare drum, tenor drum and bass drum. Performances often include popular jigs, marches, airs, reels and strathspeys.
The group boasts 14 members, seven pipers and seven drummers, and hopes to expand to at least 26 members. For those interested who have absolutely no pipe or drum experience, the band members offer free lessons.
“All kinds of people join pipe bands. You don’t have to be Scottish or Irish. You just have to love the music,” David Spurlock, pipe major for the group, said.
Ancestry isn’t the only diverse aspect of the group, either.
“Our youngest member is 15 and our oldest is 69. Our members mostly work for space-related jobs but we have a funeral director and artists and other retirees, to name a few,” Spurlock said.
Recently, the band performed at the Brevard Renaissance Fair, where two dozen people showed interest in joining the group.
The band rehearses weekly in Viera at the Wuesthoff Reference Lab located at 6800 Spyglass Court.
The Space Coast Highlanders are an award-winning Grade 5 bagpipe band that was founded in 1992 and is a member of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association and the Southern United States Pipe Band Association.
