Viera Charter School’s middle school cheerleaders finished first in their division April 14 in the 2017-18 Ultimate Championships in Fort Pierce, winning the Ultimate Finale.

“That is tremendous,” VCS Principal Dr. Julie Cady said.

Having a winning season is reward enough, but the benefits of the sport go beyond winning, said Rita Jordan, the faculty sponsor who coaches all cheerleaders from kindergarten to eighth grade and who has cheered competitively since college. And it is as valuable for the school as it is for the individual, she said.

“It brings unity to a school and increases school pride. Also, it supports the athletics programs,” Jordan said.

Added co-leader and middle school sponsor, VCS teacher Laura Bowen, who has cheered since middle school, “It opens you up, gives you confidence, helps you bond with team members. Plus, it’s a great way to get in shape.”

Beyond that, “honored” winning team member sixth-grader Isabel Gonzales Nieves added, “It is great fun!”
