Viera High School Resource Officer John Ready has received a very special recognition from the Melbourne Regional Chamber.

Ready, a Brevard County Sheriff’s corporal, was named the chamber’s recipient of the School Resource Officer of the Year — High School Award. He was honored at the 11th annual Valor Awards ceremony in late August.

“I look at it as when you connect with the kids, that’s when the real police work begins,” he said. “That’s just my philosophy. You’ve got to be able to connect with the kids to let them see you in a different light, other than always (being) in trouble.

“That’s really what I base everything on —  connecting with the kids.”

In addition to his award from the chamber, Ready was named Viera High’s 2018 Employee of the Year.

Viera High principal Sarah Robinson had nothing but praise for Ready, who is now in his third year working at Brevard County’s largest school.

“Viera High School is fortunate to have Cpl. John Ready as our school resource officer,” Robinson wrote in an email. “On a daily basis, he is committed to building positive relationships with students on our campus and ensuring a safe learning environment for our students."
