Temple Israel of Brevard will break ground on their new 8,500 square feet Viera synagogue with a celebration of Jewish traditions and an Open House for the community from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25. The event at 7350 Lake Andrew Drive will begin with remarks by community and congregation leaders and the groundbreaking for the new temple. Approximately two dozen sacred texts will be buried on the 2 ½ acre property in a ceremony assisted by the children of Temple Israel and officiated by Rabbi Patricia Hickman. Afterward, the community is invited into the social hall to enjoy an assortment of finger foods and fresh baked goods, where they can browse the gift shop Judaica and chat with representatives from the religious school and over a dozen temple clubs and programs. Attendees can also learn to dance the Hora to lively Klezmer folk music provided by the Nat Kaye band. For the younger set, a bounce house and water slide will be set up outside, along with balls, games and an art station. The new Temple Israel will be built on property adjacent to the existing structure, with seating for approximately 250 people. Completion of the new Temple Israel of Brevard is expected by the summer of 2020. For more information about Temple Israel of Brevard, go to or call 321-631-9494.

Rabbi Patricia Hickman is pleased that the preliminary designs for the new temple include a center for Jewish learning and recreation, to nourish the spiritual, social and educational needs of the growing congregation.

"We are excited to be building a beautiful new temple with room for more Jewish families," said Rabbi Hickman. "For those who may be looking for a joyful Reform Jewish congregation and have not yet found a spiritual home, we invite you to join us!"

In 2018, the congregation of Temple Israel of Brevard announced the sale of 7 ½ acres of their 10-acre parcel on Lake Andrew Drive in Viera to Chabad of the Space & Treasure Coasts. After the new Temple Israel is complete, Chabad of the Space & Treasure Coasts will take occupancy of the existing structure at 7350 Lake Andrew Drive in Viera.
