With so many great fields around Brevard County, it’s easy to see how the Space Coast United Soccer Club (SCU) has been so successful this year.
On Feb. 2 and 3, the 12U boys of the SCU traveled to Jacksonville where they qualified for regionals. The finals for Region B (Division 2) were held at the Max K. Rodes Park in Melbourne, where the 12U SCU boys won the Commissioner’s Cup on March 16 and 17.
There are four regions in Florida: A, B, C, and D. At the state finals, in Auburndale, the 12U SCU boys were ultimately successful, earning the title of state champion. The state finals were held April 13 and 14.
“The team at this level, and at this age group has never made it this far,” said Kara Mehalick, whose son Cole plays on the 12U team. “We’ve been to regionals, but we’ve been eliminated early on; they’ve never actually won it.”
At the state level, players and parents alike were cheering for the boys on the field.
“(Kara) didn’t have a voice for about three or four days,” said Rich Mehalick, Kara’s husband.
“It was crazy, it was exciting,” Kara Mehalick added. “The regional part of it was (especially) hard for the boys because we did have some injuries, we had some kids out, so we were pretty limited on our substitutions. The boys fought hard to actually make it.”
The state win is the final step for the 12U boys, who cannot advance to the nationals at the 12U level. For the time being, the boys are state champions and can revel in their win.
“One of the coolest things for this age group is that, as strong as Space Coast United is, at this age group none of the teams have ever advanced this far, let alone (secured a) win,” Mehalick said. “And I think that’s a testament to what (the SCU) is doing with (its) step-up process.”
The 12U boys team is led by coach Willie Daffron and assistant coach Matt Stallbaum.
