Martha Smith had never played in the USTA National Women’s Clay Court Championships before last month.
Now, the 91-year-old Satellite Beach resident is hooked and already planning to return to Houston for next year’s tournament.
Smith, who said she likes to play “hit-and-giggle” tennis, was one of two players in the tournament’s 90-year-old age bracket, which ran from March 27 to April 2 at the Houston Racquet Club.
Though she did not get to bring home the championship trophy, Smith said she enjoyed everything about the tournament. She also was able to take home her very first USTA Silver Ball for finishing second.
