Manatee students enjoy annual event
Students help Manatee Elementary with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Outdoor Classroom
Manatee Elementary opened its doors Aug. 18 for its annual Ice Cream Social and Open House. Besides the yummy celebration happening inside the school, smoothies from Planet Smoothie made outdoor a delicious and attractive stop as well.
At 5:45p.m., principal Carl Brown introduced families to the new outdoor space, where they are invited to have lunch with their children and teachers are encouraged to take their students for hands-on activities and a bit of fresh air.
Created in 2015 by volunteers, staff members, teachers and students, the space was transformed from a pre-K playground to an outdoor classroom that has seven planter boxes — one per grade — that classes utilize for their experiments and ongoing learning, and six picnic tables made of recycled material that can be used for both learning and enjoying a meal.
Manatee Meadow Outdoor Classroom, the name families selected for the space, started a few years ago as a dream for many parents. With the support from the principal and local businesses, such as Ward’s Home Repair and ACE Hardware, as well as the leadership of volunteers, the Meadow is now ready and open for business.
