It’s still hot out and weekly competitions and events also have been heating up in the Viera East Men’s Golf Association. Often, a mere stroke is all that separates first place from fourth place.
A new quarterly competition called On The Fly takes the individual’s lowest score for each month for a three-month period to determine the winners. It’s never boring as events vary from flighted competitions to two-man best ball or four-man scrambles.
On Aug. 10, VEMA held an individual flight tournament. Tim Brown won the first flight, John McComas and Jim Smith tied for second. Marc Brown and Jim Robinson tied for fourth.
John Wierda won the second flight, Bruce Schwanda was second and Paul Winter placed third. Mike Schmitt and Bob David tied for fourth.
In the third flight, John Gulla prevailed. William Oakley was second and Jack Webb placed third. Tony Hines was fourth.
Ed Raleigh won the fourth flight, David Hill was second and Ken Tucker placed third. Glen Tarsha was fourth.
Raleigh on No. 4, Tucker on No. 7, David Horst on No. 13 and Smith on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin.
After the tournament that night, VEMA hosted a pizza party and raffle for members and their guests at the Viera East Resident’s Clubhouse. Approximately 50 people attended and enjoyed the evening’s festivities, games and drawings. Two grand prizes of beautiful gift baskets, one for a man and one for a woman, were donated by Gail Benton.
