Officials hope a major overhaul to the 25-year-old clubhouse at the Viera East Golf Club will enhance the golfing experience for Viera East Community Development District residents and guests.
The clubhouse renovation, estimated at $2.9 million, is part of several projects proposed under the $11 million bond unanimously approved July 25 by the five members of the VECDD’s Board of Supervisors.
Timothy A. Melloh, general manager and chief operating officer for the Viera East Golf Club and VECDD, said the clubhouse renovations also will include a community restaurant with a private dining room and covered patio seating.
“The vision of the restaurant is to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in a setting with beautiful views of the sunset overlooking the golf course,” Melloh wrote in an email. “The current grille is basically a snack bar with a 72-square foot kitchen that is hard to produce food service for large parties and golf tournaments.”
Melloh said other improvements to the clubhouse include:
• Golf operations: A larger golf shop with updated decor for enhanced merchandise sales and golfer registration to accommodate the 52,000 rounds of golf annually.
• Improved men’s and women’s restrooms: Enlarged restrooms and locker area with updated decor to accommodate the 52,000 rounds of golf annually.
• CDD offices: A new conference room and reception area to better conduct VECDD business, also with updated decor. The conference room will be available to all residents of the VECDD.
• Food and beverage operation: A brand new kitchen and service area, a brand new private dining area, a brand new covered patio seating and enhancements to the current dining room.
Melloh added there are some “behind the scenes” upgrades to the clubhouse structure that are needed to meet today’s building codes.
During last month’s public hearing, Melloh defended the bond and the proposed renovations to the clubhouse and golf course because it was time to upgrade the facility.
“It’s been 25 years since we started and many areas are well past their life expectancy,” he said. “We need to make the improvements to stay competitive with other area golf courses.”
The Viera East Golf Club was constructed by the Viera Company in 1994 as a focal point and amenity to the development. It was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Joe Lee, who also has designed many top courses throughout the country, including Disney Palms, Disney Magnolia, Disney Lake Buena Vista, Doral Blue Monster and the NCR Country Club.
Each year, the golf course hosts more than 50,000 rounds of golf and is considered one of the best facilities in Brevard County and Central Florida. The golf course operates off the funds generated through greens fees, cart fees, membership fees, trail fees, merchandise sales, driving range sales, restaurant lease and golf instruction leases.
VECDD residents receive a 25 percent discount on the daily rates for golf and a 20 percent discount on merchandise for sale in the golf pro shop.
