Children raise money for hungry children

Adults often raise money for the Children’s Hunger Project but the children got a chance to get in on the act with their own walkathon April 16 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera.

A total of 107 children walked in loops for an hour around the church grounds to fulfill pledges, with a shorter loop for the younger children.

Among supporters cheering them on was Bob Barnes, executive director of the Children’s Hunger Project, which provides children with food backpacks for the weekends when they would otherwise go hungry.

“We wanted to have something for the children to do and we came up with a Mercy in Motion: Children Helping Children walkathon because for the Catholic Church this is the year of mercy,”  the Rev. Brad Beaupre said.

Added the Rev. John Britto, “We thought we should address the hunger in Brevard County which is very acute and very shameful. Since we are talking about children going hungry during the weekends, we thought we should involve our own children.”
