Viera, Holy Trinity football teams open season tonight
It promises to be a special night for both the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and Viera High football teams as they open their seasons with the Kickoff Classic.
The Viera Hawks, coming off an 8-2 season, will host perennial Brevard County power Merritt Island at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by the Bright House Sport Network as its Game of the Week. It will mark the first time a Viera football game will appear on TV and is a sign of just how far this program has come following last year’s breakthrough 8-2 season.
“Between the TV game and some of our guys getting college scholarships, the feeling around here is that we’ve kind of grown up a little bit as a school,” Viera coach Kevin Mays said.
For Holy Trinity, tonight’s road game at 7:30 against Liberty of Kissimmee will mark the debut of new head coach Nate Hooks Jr.
The Class 3A Tigers will likely face a tough task against Liberty, which is Class 7A and will have 50-60 more players on its sideline. Hooks wasn’t worried.
“They can only put 11 out there,” he said. “If my 11 are as good as their 11, we’ll be in good shape. Most people think fatigue will come into play, but if we use our timeouts wisely, along with the official timeouts … plus training for those conditions, we should be all right.
“We’re a few good men. We’ve got to train that way.”
Tonight’s games will not count in the regular season standings, but will give each team a chance to assess where they stand before the regular season starts next week.
Viera will open the season Aug. 29 at Rockledge, while Holy Trinity hosts Father Lopez. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
