Viera Voice sister newspaper Senior Life was presented with a proclamation Aug. 4 in honor of its Friday, Aug. 14 event "Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive" set to celebrate 70 years since the end of World War II. Senior Life's new veterans publication Stripes is hosting the countywide event that is part of a nationwide campaign by the nonprofit Victory Florida.
"We honor our veterans who fought for our country, and residents back home who also sacrificed for the war effort," said Cheryl Roe of Senior Life's Stripes in receiving the proclamation, read by District 4 Commissioner Curt Smith, in whose district Senior Life publisher Bluewater Creative Group is headquartered.
"These historic accomplishments were achieved through the collective service and personal sacrifice of the people of the United States, and the people of Florida, including those who served in uniform and those who supported them on the home front," Smith read from the proclamation.
Roe detailed event plans that included the debut of a video that showcases the first-hand accounts of Space Coast residents who recall August 14, 1945 "to preserve the experiences of our Greatest Generation for generations to come."
The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Space Coast Convention Center at Holiday Inn Express at 301 Tucker Lane in Cocoa, and offers free barbecue and dessert tastings, live music and exhibits. For more information or to reserve tickets by phone required for the free event, call 321-242-1235.
