Brevard residents show community pride in annual fun run
Competitors gather at the start line prior to the start of the 4th annual Battle of Brevard Fun Run on Aug. 1 at the Viera Regional Center.
More than 250 people from across Brevard gathered to show pride in their respective communities as the 4th annual Battle of Brevard Fun Run was held in Viera on Aug. 1.
The event, organized by Space Coast Runners, is meant to be a friendly competition between cities to see who could bring the most participants with the winners each receiving blue ribbons.
“Four years ago we decided we wanted to do some community outreach events that would be free that would kind of get people that might not come out and do runs every day or walks so we created the Battle of Brevard,” said Brittany Streufert, who serves as director of operations for Space Coast Runners.
Each participant was asked to wear a color representing their county. For instance, runners from Viera were asked to wear green while many from Rockledge were clad in gray.
And indeed, both Rockledge and Viera, which claimed first prize in the event in 2015 and 2016 respectively, were both well-represented with each community bringing 40 residents to the event, which placed them in a tie for second behind Merritt Island, which took the top spot for the second year in a row.
Participants were allowed to walk or run as much or as little of a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) -long course. All routes began and ended at Viera Regional Park, with the longest path taking participants west from the park as they passed Viera High School and Viera Charter School before returning.
Despite the friendly competition, runners from Viera said enjoyed the lighthearted nature of the run and the social opportunities it brought.
“It’s fun to come and be with all my fellow running friends and get a little exercise,” said David Grant.
“I want to with friends and a lot of times you run by yourself during the week and to get out with other people it’s more fun,” added Roseanne Bessenaire.
Participants got an added bonus in that they were also treated to free pizza from Viera Pizza and free shaved ice from Kona Ice following their runs or walk.
