GAAB toy and gift drive brunch now in sixth year, expands charitable reach
This year the Greek-American Association of Brevard (GAAB) is wishing for toys and gift cards rather than golden rings from its true love – its members and friends – and the number five refers instead to the number of years the annual holiday champagne brunch has benefited children.
And this year, in addition to children living at Devereux residential school in Viera, the noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 event will also benefit the littlest residents of Nana's House Children's Home community.
“We are so impressed with that they do, we wanted to help them as well. It is a small gated community of loving homes for children as an alternative to entering the foster care system. They are faith-based and do not receive any government funding, so we felt it was our job as part of the community to pitch in,” said Ioanna Hawkins, who with GAAB president Soula Mitropoulos is co-chairing the brunch. “We were amazed by the enthusiasm and passion the director Kim Frodge demonstrated. We are thrilled to get involved.”
New also this year is the location, which once again has expanded to accommodate the growth of the event. It will be at the riverfront estate home of Dr. Steve and Valerie Karas at 3600 Riverside Drive in in Indialantic. The Karases actually introduced GAAB to the NANA's House mission and offered up their home, which will be decorated with Christmas trees throughout and open for tours with waterfront views. The move and expanded mission underscores the fact that the Suntree/Viera-based event is county-wide.
“This is one of the ways we give back to the community,” Mitropoulos said.
The charitable civic association is a county-wide cultural group centered at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Suntree on Wickham Road, the site of popular food-centered festivals with authentic Greek dancing that also attract the public for community benefit.
Cost for the brunch is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. For more information on GAAB or the toy brunch, go to gaab.us or call 321-622-3141.
