Viera Charter School students collected more than 3,000 cans of food for hungry families and made a donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank during the WESH 2 Share Your Christmas Food Drive. Food items were delivered Dec. 5 to the Brevard County Government Complex in Viera.

The project was organized by the school’s Math and Science Leadership Academy, which not only attracts students who excel and wish to excel further in math and science, but goes a step beyond.

“We focus on leadership skills, so this was the perfect project for students as they had to request donations from their families, friends and our community,” sixth-grade science teacher Kim Honeycutt told WESH 2 news anchor Adrian Whitsett. The report was broadcast on television in the morning and repeated throughout the day.

The academy is team-coordinated by Honeycutt and Julie Mills, VCS Math Instructional Coach. The academy reflects the school’s STEAM focus – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math – and both organizes field trips to, and brings in, cutting-edge industry leaders. It is the fifth year the school took part in the WESH 2 project – since the year the school opened – this year surpassing all years, with three VCS Renfro sisters making the top donations.

Partnering with VCS was Two Men and a Truck franchise of Melbourne, owned by Mark and Brenda VanAntwerp of Rockledge, grandparents of VCS student Ethan Mercer. Volunteering during collection and dissemination of the many boxes were the VanAntwerps’ daughter Kylee Mercer, Ethan’s mom, and employees Doug Mitchelly, Evan Mitchell, Logan Flater, and Ronald Farnham.

“They nailed it. They hit it out of the park,” WESH 2 cameraman Mike Kirby said of the student project.
