A home on the 1700 block of Laramie Circle in Viera sustained severe damage as the result of a fire on the afternoon of Nov. 27.
“We had about 25-30 mph winds with a single residential house fire,” said Tom Neidert, Brevard County Fire Rescue District Chief. “The roof was fully involved.”
The two occupants of the house, Martha Roberts and Rick Norton, along with their two dogs all escaped the home, though Norton sustained what Neidert termed as “very minor burns, singed hair.” He was transported to Viera Hospital.
“Obviously I feel fortunate that everybody’s OK.” said Roberts, who added that she and had lived in the home for nearly seven years. “…Like my purse is in there, my ID, everything is in there, everything is in there. I didn’t even have a jacket. That’s it….I did lose a lot of stuff.”
The cause of the fire, Neidert said, was still under investigation, though Roberts indicated that the fire started in the garage.
“At first I thought ‘oh you know what, this is just a little thing it’s not gonna be a big deal’ but it was a big deal,” said Roberts of the fire. “It just got bigger and bigger.”
A next-door neighbor added that he was startled by a pair of booms coming from the home.
“My power went out and then I heard two different explosions, one was really loud, it rattled my entire room. The second one was smaller.” said Joel Wyman. “…I walked outside and I just saw like 10-foot flames, there were sparks coming out (of) the side of the house.”
Neidert added that crews were on scene “within three minutes” of receiving a call about the fire and that the blaze was “under control” around 15 minutes after they arrived on scene.
