Making a difference in the Viera community through giving, the Viera Woman’s Club invites area women to attend its annual membership social Aug. 17.
The club members encourage volunteerism in the community through club membership.
“The 115 members in Viera meet over lunch and go over volunteer opportunities,” said Judy Small, the publicity chair for the organization. “The membership social is held every year in August and is purely social. We have wine, lemonade and hors d’oeuvres and each of our chairs gets up and talks about all the opportunities we have in the community to volunteer.”
Under the motto, Living the volunteer spirit and making a difference in our community, the organization is in its 15th year. There are several community service projects managed by the organization.
Areas include education, conservation, home life (Aging Matters, Meals on Wheels, raising funds for the heart fund), international outreach (school supplies overseas, sewing for those overseas hospitals), local public issues, veterans’ groups, singing around the area, public issues, domestic violence, and helping anyway possible for the Hacienda Girls Ranch.
Members have a singing group that performs for veterans at the VA clinic and nursing homes, have painted rooms at the girls’ ranch, and even make meals every month at the Haven group home for children.
“You can pick the area you feel strongly about,” Small said. “There is so much you can do in your community. There is so much need here. We also partner with businesses to help promote the area and help with the Senior Life Expo.”
It’s not all projects. There are social opportunities and belonging nurtures new friendships. To attend the event from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Viera East Residence Club at 2300 Clubhouse Drive in Rockledge, make reservations by Aug. 10 by emailing GfwcVieraWC@gmail.com. Include your name, contact information and any names of guests you are bringing or call Harriett Hankerson at 770-312-1555. School supplies will be collected at the event.
