Eagle Scout candidate constructs new kiosk at wetlands
Some of the volunteers on the construction of the new Viera Wetlands information kiosk include Boy Scouts Troop 224 Eagle Scout candidate Mitchell Shafer, left, dad Mark Shafer, David Bowman and son Dawson, Alex Page, Brennan Wooden, Mitchell Albright, adult leader /carpenter Bobby Chasin on ladder behind him, Scott Hehn and dad Ken Hehn.
Troop 224 Eagle Scout candidate Mitchell Shafer and his fellow Boy Scouts completed construction of a new, larger informational kiosk at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands on May 14. All materials were donated from Lowes and Home Depot.
“The main problem with the old kiosk is that it was to the left of the entrance,” Shafer said. “With the popularity of this location, traffic now is routed to the right of the entrance, so you don’t see the information about the Viera Wetlands and all there is to see until you are leaving. This will fix that.”
A graduating Viera High School senior, Shafer was on the Viera Hawks football team and in JROTC. He will attend Eastern Florida State College and transfer to the University of Central Florida through the Navy Reserves. All Eagle Scout candidates will receive their rank at a ceremony at host site Suntree United Methodist Church this fall.
“I wanted a project that was challenging but not too hard. I do come here a lot so it was a way to give back to nature and others, since this is the No. 3 bird watching spot in the nation,” Shafer said.
