Troop 224 Eagle Scout candidate Mitchell Shafer and his fellow Boy Scouts completed construction of a new, larger informational kiosk at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands on May 14. All materials were donated from Lowes and Home Depot.

“The main problem with the old kiosk is that it was to the left of the entrance,” Shafer said. “With the popularity of this location, traffic now Boy Scout Troop 224 Eagle Scout candidate Mitchell Shafer shows off the finished product, a new info kiosk at the Viera Wetlands. | PHOTO BY JOSHUA GAFFEYis routed to the right of the entrance, so you don’t see the information about the Viera Wetlands and all there is to see until you are leaving. This will fix that.”

A graduating Viera High School senior, Shafer was on the Viera Hawks football team and in JROTC. He will attend Eastern Florida State College and transfer to the University of Central Florida through the Navy Reserves. All Eagle Scout candidates will receive their rank at a ceremony at host site Suntree United Methodist Church this fall.

“I wanted a project that was challenging but not too hard. I do come here a lot so it was a way to give back to nature and others, since this is the No. 3 bird watching spot in the nation,” Shafer said.
