One of the most important stepping stones to adulthood is graduating high school, when young adults can consider for themselves what they would like to pursue with their lives.
On May 24, graduates from Viera High School gathered at the Hawk Stadium to commemorate their graduation ceremony.
The ceremony began with the Viera JROTC color guard presenting the Floridian and American flags and followed thereafter by the school band playing Pomp and Circumstance.
Among the Class of 2019, there were three groups of students that were especially recognized for their efforts.
The first of these were the Principal’s Scholars, who wore gold academic stoles to demonstrate their excellence in their studies.
The second group of students were distinguished by earning their candidacy of Associate of Arts degrees via Eastern Florida State College.
The final group was recognized as candidates for the College Board’s Capstone Advanced Placement Diploma.
Among the speakers for the graduation ceremony were VHS President Sarah Robinson, School Board Member Dist. 4 Matt Susin, and Director of Professional Learning & Development, Michel Alba.
“Parents, grandparents, guardians— thank you for loaning your students to us for the past four years,” Alba said during his President’s Address.“It has been a wonderful experience supporting your sons and daughters, throughout their entire high school career. I do want to make one thing clear, though: after tonight, you are taking them all back!
“Your friends will determine the quality and direction of your life,” Alba advised. “Graduates; as you look back on your years [...] I’m sure you can think of times where your friends encouraged and supported you through some difficult or challenging situations, to help you gain a better perspective on the situation, and reminded you of your value and worth.”
Alba also advised the graduates to be aware of those that might not support them as well as they might have, and asked that the Class of 2019 take care to surround themselves with friends of worth.
After the speakers, the ceremony then commenced in full, and the Class of 2019 became official graduates of Viera High School.
With this graduation under their belts, the Class of 2019 finishes one chapter of their lives and begin another, where they can take on new careers, further their education, do something radically different or even change the world.
