Senior night always brings out a range of emotions.
And in the case of the Viera High girls soccer team, it brought out another victory, too.
Brooke Walsh scored three goals and Sarah Kelliher had two goals and an assist to help the Hawks defeat visiting Lincoln Park 8-0 Monday night.
Jordan Walsh had a goal and an assist for the Hawks (14-1-1). JJ Bryant and Hollyn Knight also scored. Morgan Pulliam had two assists and Cori Fisher and Kailee Holland had one each.
It was the final regular-season home game for Jordan Walsh, Kelliher, Alexandra Capalbo and Sarah Sanford.
“Playing with this team for three years, I love them to death,” Jordan Walsh said. “Just thinking about not playing with them next year … it’s a hard thing to think of. It was a very emotional night for me.”
The defending state champion Hawks won’t play again until Jan. 6 when they visit Space Coast. The district tournament starts the following week with Viera holding the No. 1 seed thanks to Monday night's win.
Just as they did Monday night, the seniors will be center stage.
“Once we get about two weeks away from the playoffs, I always start with the speech, ‘The rest of the season is always about the seniors,’” Viera coach Courtney Lundy said.
The Hawks have won their last seven games in a row and have outscored their opponents 38-1 during that span.
“They’ve been playing really well,” Lundy said. “They have really showed compassion and composure, playing against some of the tougher teams and just sticking to who we are and not getting emotional based on the refs or other teams.
"They’ve come together well in those games and those challenges.”
