It was a wild finish to be sure.

But in the end, the Viera-Suntree Little League All-Star Junior baseball team prevailed in its opening game of the Southeast Regionals on Friday, defeating Georgia 11-8 in eight innings.

The VSLL will face North Carolina, a 15-4 winner over Virginia, in a winner’s bracket game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Broadway, Virginia.

Luc Iten’s bases loaded single scored Cole Smith and Apollos Horrell with the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning as the VSLL broke a 6-6 tie.

After Logan Keith walked to load the bases again, Luke McDonough was hit by a pitch. That brought Lucas Glendinning home to give the VSLL a three-run lead.

A Camden Wicker RBI single and a wild pitch that allowed Keith to slide home safely made it 11-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Georgia would score two more runs in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough.

Wicker went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the VSLL. Iten had two hits and also drove in three runs. Glendinning had two RBIs.

Horrell, who walked three times at the plate, got the start on the mound for the VSLL. He allowed two hits and one run in two innings, striking out five and walking none.

The VSLL trailed 4-2 going into the top of the seventh inning and scored four times to take a 6-4 lead before Georgia would take advantage of some defensive lapses rally to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

The two teams combined for 13 runs in the final two frames.
