Now that’s how you start off a World Series.
The Viera-Suntree Little League All-Stars scored 10 runs in the second inning – all with two outs – on the way to blowing out Maryland 15-2 in five innings Sunday in the opening round of the Junior League Baseball World Series in Taylor, Michigan.
With the win, the VSLL moves into the winner’s bracket and will play the Central Region winner (Johnston, Iowa) on Monday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+
Apollos Horrell went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk to lead the Florida team. He also started the game on the mound and struck out one and walked one in 1 1/3 innings.
Lucas Glendinning had two hits and delivered a two-run single in the top of the first inning to put the VSLL on the board.
Logan Keith also had a big day with three hits, including a ground-rule double, and three RBIs. He also scored twice.
Blake Strode had a pinch-hit, two-run single. Cameron Simpkins also had an RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk.
Luc Iten had a hit and scored twice. Brycen Weeks had a hit. Cameron Ruston put down a perfect bunt and was safe on a throwing error that brought home a run. He later scored.
At the top of the order, Cole Smith continued to find ways to get on base. He walked, was hit by a pitch and scored three times.
Dylan Jordan came on in relief of Horrell and threw well, as did Glendinning and Smith as the VSLL tried to spread out its pitching to keep each player’s pitch counts low.
The VSLL also got strong play from Luke McDonough at first base and key contributions from Aaron Brand and Camden Wicker, who walked twice and scored a run.
