Hawks ranked No. 1 academically in Class 7A

Viera High’s athletic teams are excelling in the classroom, as well as on the field of play.

The Hawks are the FHSAA Class 7A academic champions for the fall semester, putting them in a good position to win the title at the end of the year.

Viera’s boys swimming and diving team had a cumulative GPA of 3.709, which was tops in the state for Class 7A. The boys cross country team (3.688) ranked second in their division, with football (3.153) also placing second. Girls swimming and diving (3.639) was fourth.

The state champion girls golf team was fourth academically at 3.803, while the boys golf team was seventh (3.566).

Viera’s bowling, girls cross country and volleyball teams also qualified for the award.

Points are awarded for the first 10 academic finishers in each division, with 10 points going to the top team, nine points to the second-place team and on down the line.

Viera scored 46 points this fall, putting the Hawks seven points ahead of Fort Myers and Lakewood Ranch of Bradenton.

Titusville High was ranked fifth, and Rockledge eighth in Class 5A. West Shore was fourth in Class 4A, while Covenant Christian was sixth in Class 2A.
