Viera girls top Melbourne 1-0 on late goal

Score one for the Hawks.

Viera High’s girls soccer team pulled off a huge victory Thursday night, beating defending Class 4A state champion Melbourne 1-0 at Hawk Stadium in a key District 6 contest.

Hollyn Knight scored the game winner for the Hawks in the final three minutes. The goal came on a double assist from Jordan Walsh and Hope Leonard. Goalkeeper Sydney Lau had five saves to earn the shutout.

Viera, now 9-0-0, has been positively dominant this season. In fact, the Hawks have yet to allow a goal all season. Viera has outscored its opponents 57-0.

Thursday’s win marked only the second time Viera has defeated Melbourne in girls soccer, and certainly gives the Hawks a big boost of confidence.

“The game consisted of quality play from both teams, pouring rain and a true Viera High School TEAM!!!” Hawks coach Courtney Lundy wrote in an email. “It took everyone on the team working together to create the true soccer that was played last night.”

Viera still has two big games on its schedule – at Merritt Island (Dec. 10) and home against St. Thomas Aquinas (Dec. 12) – before it hosts the district tournament next month.
