The Viera High volleyball team had been waiting a year to get another crack at the Rockledge Raiders.

And this time, the Hawks weren’t going to be denied.

Viera improved to 2-0 on the season Tuesday night with a 25-15. 25-18. 25-6 win over the visiting Raiders.

Senior Cailea Gibbs, who has committed to the University of North Florida, led Viera with 12 kills and repeatedly came up with big plays for the Hawks.

Junior middle blocker Kaitlyn Jensen really “stepped up” in the eyes of Viera coach Sarah Wayne with seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

Wayne was also impressed by the play of junior Allison Foy, who stepped into the libero role and helped get the Viera offense going with her “steady and consistent” play.

Viera lost to Rockledge in the regular season and the postseason last year, giving the Hawks plenty of motivation coming into Tuesday’s game.

And while the second and third games were certainly more contested than the first, there Hawks appeared to be in control throughout the contest.

It’s been a great start of the season for the entire Viera program as all three levels – varsity, junior varsity and freshmen – are now 2-0.
