Viera golf teams heading back to Class 3A state tournament

The Viera High girls golf team will get a chance to defend its Class 3A state title and the Viera boys will get a crack at the gold as well.

Both teams qualified out of their Class 3A, Region 6 tournaments at Pointe West Country Club in Vero Beach this week. The girls won their tournament by one shot over Jupiter, while the boys were second, four shots behind Vero Beach

The state tournament will take place Nov. 3-4 at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills.

“Proud of the team effort this year,” Viera boys coach Paul Bentley wrote in an email. “This is a culmination of years of work on the course, in the classroom, and in the community.”

Sophomore Calvin Sierota shot a 72 to lead the boys, while senior Kyle Decenzo and junior Tyler Greek each came home with a 74. Senior Ryan Rozic was next with an 80 and senior Mitchell Albright shot 90.

For the girls, senior Sophie Liu had a 77 while junior Samantha Brimhall shot 78 and senior Taylor Rajeski had a 79. Sophomore Dayna Owens came in with an 86 and sophomore Trinity Falzone shot 88.

Pairings for the first day of the state tournament have already been announced. The boys will play on the El Campeon Course beginning at 8 a.m. when Albright tees off from the 10th hole with players from Plant (Tampa) and Winter Park.

The girls will also begin play on the 10th hole, but they will be on the Los Colinas course. Falzone will start things off at 8 a.m. along with golfers from Jupiter and Lakewood Ranch.

Viera’s boys finished sixth in the state last year, and made it known this season that they were shooting for what would be the first state championship in program history.

A five-shot win over Lake Mary last year gave Viera’s girls their second state championship. No other Viera team has as many titles. Should the Hawks win back-to-back state titles, it would also be a first in school history.
