Boyd, Jensen break records as 4 Hawks qualify for state track meet

Jamyson Boyd and Kaitlyn Jensen didn’t just qualify for the Class 3A state track meet.

They set a couple of Viera High School records in the process.

Boyd and Jensen were among four Viera athletes who finished in the top four at last week’s regional meet held in Pompano Beach, qualifying them for the state meet which will be held Friday and Saturday at IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton.

Senior JP Caglione came in second in the shot put with a throw of 52-feet while. Junior Nick Bandos, went 14-feet in the pole vault for a second-place finish.

Jensen, meanwhile, finished third and set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 124-10. The junior also finished fourth in the shot put (39-4).

The highlight of the day, however, came when Boyd when he set a school record in the long jump, going 23 feet to finish first in the entire region. The senior also earned a trip to the state meet in the high jump with a mark of 6-2, just shy of the school record (6-3) he set earlier this year.

Viera track coach Dave Costello, who has announced he is retiring at the end of the season, was pleased with his team’s results.

“I’m very proud of all the athletes that qualified for states," Costello wrote in an email. “There is a good chance everyone will medal. Our region probably is one of the best in the country. It's a good way to go out.”
