Fresh off the most successful season in program history, the Viera High football team hit the field for the first day of spring practice on Monday.

While the Hawks will certainly have some starting spots to fill next season after the graduation of a talented senior class, the cupboard isn’t exactly bare.

Most of the front seven returns on defense – including all-state selections Marco Foreman at defensive end and Brandon Mays at linebacker. The Hawks also return four starters on the offensive line.

Spring practice will also give plenty of opportunity for other players to catch the eye of the coaching staff, including Sean Atkins and Seth Kennedy, who will compete all spring for the starting quarterback job.

The Haws will host Spruce Creek on May 18 at 7 p.m. in their spring game.

“It’s nice to get back (on the field),” Viera coach Kevin Mays said Monday. “The tempo of practice was pretty good. We’ve got a lot of young guys out here that have to step up. I don’t necessarily know where our leadership is right now, but we’ve got to have a couple of guys step up and be leaders and take the roles of the seniors that we lost.”
