Viera girls win, boys lose in FHSAA tennis tournament
Viera High's Izzie Diaz returns a backhand during her match in Tuesday's FHSAA regional semifinal against Jensen Beach. Diaz won her match 6-4, 6-2 and the Hawks advanced to the regional final.
The Viera High girls tennis team continued to storm through postseason play Tuesday, defeating Jensen Beach 7-0 in an FHSAA regional match at Eastern Florida State College.
The Hawks will travel to West Boca Raton on Thursday with a spot in the Class 3A state tournament on the line. West Boca Raton defeated Bayside 5-0 on Tuesday.
Viera’s Sasha Belaya defeated Alanna Strauss of Jensen Beach 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Izzie Diaz topped Anna Ellis 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Amanda Sedaros beat Kyra Abbott 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot and it was Hope Woodruff over Natalie Thurlow 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 and Emily Li over Alex Biggs 7-5, 7-6 at No. 5 singles.
With the win secured, the doubles matches were played in an eight-game pro set Belaya/Diaz won 8-2 and Sedaros/Woodruff won 8-0.
The unbeaten Hawks are on a historic run this season.
VIERA BOYS LOSE
It was a rough day for the Viera boys in their regional match Tuesday as the Hawks lost their FHSAA regional opener on the road at Jensen Beach 5-0.
Nico Fuchs, Gabe Diaz, John Shi, Matt Podzelinski and Dylan Layun all played singles for Viera.
