As the Viera High boys tennis team proved Monday afternoon, the Hawks are a pretty formidable group no matter what lineup they put out on the court.

The Hawks defeated visiting Covenant Christian 5-2 in a non-district matchup on a very blustery day in Viera.

With top singles players Gabe Diaz, Griffin Lamp, Nico Andrade and Zak Sedaros sitting the match out, the Hawks got a big lift from their only senior – Matt Bean.

Not only did Bean defeat Joshua Halford 8-1 in a pro set match at No. 1 singles, he also teamed with Oskar Jiborn to beat Covenant Christian’s Halford and Jared Hoenigmann 8-2 in a No. 1 doubles match.

Jiborn also beat Hoenigmann 8-4 in No. 3 singles.

Viera also scored wins at No. 4 singles when Jack Bleau knocked off Brayden Truman 8-4, and at No. 2 doubles with Ben Gust and Tyler Ray defeated Cameron Rukowski and Truman 6-3.

The Hawks improved to 9-2 on the season.

Viera has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the Cape Coast Conference’s South Division for the first time in program history.

“The boys are prepared and we take each challenge as it comes,” Viera boys coach John Lindheimer said. “We just make sure we’re mentally and physically prepared to compete as hard as we can.

“I know my boys like the back of my hand. The lineup we put out there is always going to give our team the best chance to win.”
