Tigers win district title thanks to clutch play in final minutes

The Holy Trinity boys basketball team got some clutch play from a number of different players Friday night.

And now the Tigers are district champs.

Javaris Johnson hit three 3-pointers, went 3-for-3 at the free throw line and finished with 12 points for Holy Trinity, which defeated James Carroll 42-40 in the Class 3A, District 10 title game held at Cocoa Beach.

Trailing 40-39 late in the game, the Tigers got a big play from Theo Mansell, who tipped in a missed shot to put Holy Trinity up by one.

After a free throw by Antwan Freeman made it a two-point Tigers lead, the game was sealed when Holy Trinity’s Trenton Gowins took a charge.

Mansell finished the game with 10 points – which included a pair of 3-pointers – while Gowins was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Holy Trinity (18-9) will host a regional quarterfinal game Thursday night against an opponent yet to be determined. The FHSAA is expected to announce the brackets for all classifications in this year’s playoffs on Sunday night.
