SCU teams bring back memories from nationals

A pair of Space Coast United Soccer teams may have returned from the National Cup XVI Finals in Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana without a championship trophy, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the trip of a lifetime.

The boys U13 team went 0-1-2 in its three-game stint, tying New York Stars Premier Galaxy 1-1 in the opener before falling to a team from Rhode Island 3-1 on Saturday and then tying a team from New Jersey 0-0.

Goalkeeper Sammy Son made a great save on a penalty kick to preserve the tie against the New York stars. Christian Guirgis scored both goals for Space Coast United.

Other players for the SCU boys U13 team included: Alexander Bennett; Lucas Bennett; Nathaniel Chapman; Logan Collins; Matteo Dal Vecchio; Conner Floyd; Nathan Goyer; Chase Jansen; Daniel Mata; Sebastian May; Van McCaleb; Diego Sanders; Logan Supernaw; Austin Tarbet; Yordan Torres; Yorgen Torres and Carson Zander.

The U14 girls lost all three of their games at the nationals, but also enjoyed a great season as one of three Space Coast United teams (the boys U13 and girls U18 were the others) to win the Florida Cup earlier this year.

Members of the U14 team included: Savannah Oxley, Piper McHenry, Mai Jensen, Allie Worley; Madison Ainbin; Hannah Atchison; Karianna Baumhover; Julia Callard; Adrianne Gutman; Logan Humbert; Samantha Miller; Reese Pulliam; Aislin Scully; Emily Tizol; Ariana Valentin; Victoria Wehner and Serena Zarzana.

"Win, draw, or lose, the club is very proud of these teams,” SCU president Ann Fuller wrote in an email. “They continued training when most players were enjoying a break after a long year. The dedication required from the families, coaches, and players is impressive and they all made it happen.

“They represented Space Coast United Soccer Club at the national level with the good sportsmanship and strong work ethic that reflects well on youth soccer in our community.”
