The Viera-Suntree Little League All-Star Juniors Baseball team got some big-time hitting and some clutch pitching in their sectional tournament on Saturday in Port St. Lucie.

And now the team is heading to the state tournament July 19-21 at Mitchell Ellington Park on Merritt Island.

The VSLL got its shot at the state title by sweeping its best-of-three series against the host Port St. Lucie National/American Little League by scores of 12-8 and 11-1.

In the first game, the VSLL broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Logan Keith.

Lucan Glendinning got the start on the mound for the VSLL and went four innings, allowing two runs on just two hits while striking out four.

Keith, Blake Strode, Dylan Jordan, Cameron Simpkins, Cole Smith and Apollos Horrell each had a hit to help lead the VSLL Juniors.

While there may have been a little drama in the first game, the second contest was … well … no contest.

Luke Campbell got things started for the VSLL with an RBI single in the first inning.

Campbell was also part of a five-run fifth as he, Luc Iten and Luke McDonough all had key hits while Smith brought home a run on a fielder’s choice.

The VSLL would finish with 14 hits. Iten led the way, going 3-for-4 while McDonough, Camden Wicker and Campbell each had multiple hits.

Jordan got the start for the VSLL and gave up a run on just two hits while striking out five in five innings.

The VSLL also had a strong game defensively, playing errorless baseball.

UPDATE: The schedule for this year’s state tournament was released on Monday. The VSLL will be in Pool B along with District 19 winner Palm Coast and District 6 winner Palma Ceia.

Palm Coast and Palma Ceia will open pool play at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The loser of that game will play the VSLL at noon while the winner of that first game will play the VSLL at 3 p.m.

The winner of Pool B will play for the state championship on Sunday at 10 a.m. against the winner of Pool A, which consists of Dr. Phillips, North Springs, San Carlos and Land O’Lakes.

In other sectional tournament results …

* With no district or sectional opponent, a 9-11 softball team made up of players from the VSLL and Eau Gallie Little Leagues advanced straight to the state tournament, which was held last week in St. Petersburg.

Despite not having any game action going in, the team went 2-0 in pool play and advanced to the state championship game where it lost to Windermere.

No information was provided on the team’s tournament results.
