VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
There were some solid performances by members of the Viera-Suntree Little League All-Star 8-10 Green baseball team on Sunday.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to overcome a bigger, more experience All-Star team from West Melbourne, which went on to win the District 2 tournament opener 12-4 at Viera Regional Park.
“It’s a young team,” Green manager Nick Galluzzi said. “Viera has two teams, a Gold and a Green and the Green is more of a developing team. Most of the teams we’re playing have 10-year-olds and this team is comprised of 8 and 9 (year-olds) and a few 10-year-olds.”
The Green team did get off to a good start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Gabriel Norman had a single and an RBI for the Green. Cole Carroll, Derek Galluzzi and Landon Norton all had hits.
Brady Jensen and Chase Cromartie each drove in a run.
Brennan Confreda and Norton both pitched for the Green.

VSLL 11-year-olds get off to fast start
Sunday was also the All-Star season debut of the VSLL 11-year-old Gold baseball team, which defeated Eau Gallie 11-1 in four innings at Rodes Park in West Melbourne.
Apollos Horrell hit two home runs, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning get the VSLL off to a big start.
Then, after a nice diving catch by Anthony Soehnlein in the top of the second, PJ Befumo singled and Luke Campbell hit a two-run home run to make it a 5-1.
After Horrell’s second home run made it 6-1, the VSLL struck for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, the highlight coming when Luc Iten and Campbell hit back-to-back doubles.
Jaden Mack went the distance on the mound, giving up one run while striking out two and throwing 57 pitches. He also had two hits at the plate.
Iten had two hits and Horrell had the two homers and four RBIs. Campbell scored all three times he came to the plate and Befumo, Lucas Glendinning and Horrell all scored twice.
The Gold are scheduled to play against South Beaches tonight at 6:30, once again at Rodes Park.
Big win for VSLL 8-10 softball
Last year’s VSLL 8-10 softball team reached the state tournament championship game, and this year’s group seems determined to get back there again.
Baylea Holland had a double and a triple and Hayley Rider had a great day on the mound as the VSLL defeated Eau Gallie 13-1 in four innings at Rodes Park.
The girls are scheduled to return to action Tuesday at 6:30 at Rodes Park against South Beaches.
