The Viera-Suntree Little League 8-10 All-Star baseball Gold team is heading to the sectional tournament Saturday in Port St. Lucie after winning the District 2 championship in a game several observers said was the best Little League game they had seen in years.
Cole Carroll’s infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Brody Vogel to give the VSLL a 3-2 win over Eau Gallie in dramatic fashion last Tuesday.
Just a night earlier, the VSLL had forced a second and deciding title game in the double-elimination tournament by defeating Eau Gallie 12-11 in seven innings.
The second title game was highlighted by several outstanding defensive plays made by VSLL outfielders.
Derek Galluzzi made a head-first diving catch in center field, Nick Cunningham made a sliding catch in left field and right fielder Trey Spratt fielded a line drive and threw out a speedy Eau Gallie runner at first base.
Carroll started the game on the mound for the VSLL Gold, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Blaine Werkeiser took over for Carroll and shut out Eau Gallie the rest of the way, giving up just two hits.
Offensively, the Gold were led by Gabriel Norman, who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
All of the VSLL’s solid pitching and great defense kept it in the game until the decisive ninth inning.
Drew Huffman led off the inning with a walk and Vogel came in as a pinch runner. Vogel went to second on a passed ball, stole third base and then scored the game-winning run with two outs when Carroll, facing a 1-2 count, beat out an infield hit.
Manager Nick Galluzzi wrote in an email that after the VSLL All-Stars were announced on June 1, his team was “in it to win it.”
VSLL players Carroll; Vogel; Werkeiser; Cunningham; Derek Galluzzi; Huffman; Norman; Spratt; Andrew Cincimino; Kian Crockett; Dominic Deligato; Brady Jensen and Coby Wallace sure proved that right.
“These boys played their hearts out as a team and deserved to win,” Nick Galluzzi wrote. “Everyone on the roster contributed to the big win.”
