VSLL Senior All-Stars fall short in District 2 opener

The Viera-Suntree Little League Senior All-star baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t quite make it all the way back Saturday on the opening day of the District 2 playoffs at Rodes Park.

Greater West Melbourne scored a run in the second and two more in the third on the way to a 3-1 victory over the VSLL in the double-elimination tournament.

The game had originally been scheduled to take place at Viera Regional Park but was switched due to heavy rains Friday night.

William Moser started the game on the mound for the VSLL, striking out four over 4 1/3 innings. Moser also had a double and scored the only run of the game for Viera-Suntree.

Alex Horrell went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Viera offense. Robbie Behrens had two hits and Dustin Belknap added a double. Ethan Huffman drove in a run.

Alberto McCarthy threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the VSLL. Sean Rodney also threw a scoreless inning.

Viera-Suntree stranded 10 baserunners in the game.

The VSLL will return to action on Tuesday night at 6:30 at Viera Regional against the loser of Sunday’s game between Greater West Melbourne and Eau Gallie.
